What is Graphic Design and why is it important?

I like to define graphic design to be a type of art which allows you to create any masterpiece using different elements of your choice in any shape or form, but the actual definition is “a craft where professionals create visual content like typography, page layout, or visual hierarchy to communicate messages to a specific audience” Whether it be drawing, 3D-printing, videos, animations, posters, editing photos, etc. The reason why it can be important, as said before, because help spread a clear message or purpose to a certain group of people and it can be a great opportunity for businesses to creating a logo or designing posters or any creative process in Graphic Design.

With Graphic Design, there also comes the different types of elements that goes into creating an online visual of art and masterpiece, so let’s look at those elements together:

Lines – Lines are the basic structure and building blocks when it comes to creating structure into your graphic design process. There can be different version of lines like being continuous or broken, curved or straighten, smooth or zigzagged and beyond.

Shapes – Shapes are created using line in different ways, they can be geometric (drawn with computers or rulers) or organic (drawn freehand). When it comes to using shapes for creating logos or anything else, you have to line it up to get the right symmetry and alignment.

Color – Color is a big thing when it comes to not only graphic design, but art itself, it gets you your own color palette and something people are able to recognize you by through those various colors. The color wheel allows for people to select different types of color patterns like complementary colors, analogous colors, triad colors, or monochromatic. It can also introduce you to the section of warmer colors (red, orange, yellow) or cooler colors (blue, purple/violet, pink, green) it matters on the vibe and personality you want your specific target audience to know you by.

Typography – Typography is another important element in graphic design when it comes to choosing a font, you have to keep in mind of the typeface that is use which means you need to make variations of the different sizes, weights and thickness of the font. There are three properties when customizing your font:

  • Leading: adjusting the space between lines of text
  • Tracking: condensing or expanding the gap between characters
